Activities For People With Dementia - Activities For Dementia Patients

Activities For People With Dementia - A study presented at the International Conference of Alzheimer's Association showed that people who maintain a healthy lifestyle to improve their cognitive function. So says the leader of this work, Miia Kivipelto, researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Previous studies had already revealed that that the practice of healthy behaviors, such as a diet healthy, exercise and an active social life, could delay cognitive decline. However, it was not clear if the people who had these behaviors also shared another aspect more in common that delay the manifestation of symptoms of dementia.

In this sense, was a research which was analyzed two years to 1,260 Finnish adults aged between 60 and 77 years. They evaluated all the factors of risk for developing dementia and, therefore, Alzheimer. The study concluded that all of them had a cognitive performance normal or slightly below the average for their age.

To conduct this study, the adults were divided into two groups. In one, offered councils of health and on the other, the participants had to attend a program of diet, exercise and cardiovascular health and social commitments.

At the end of the tests, experts found that those who belong to the first group, had a greater cognitive impairment than those of the second group. Miia Kivipelto recognizes that a healthy lifestyle is not "no guarantee" that a person will not develop Alzheimer's. However, it considers the positive results of the study:

  • We have seen a 40% difference between intervention and control groups. It was clear that the intervention group improved from the beginning of the study.
  • Researchers will continue analyzing and evaluating patients for seven more years, to verify if the study improvements are maintained. Kivipelto acknowledges that there are very important factors such as the motivation of individuals to maintain healthy behaviors, as well as their genetic codes, which can influence the effects of treatment.

However, the expert says that this study provides evidence that prevention is possible, and that any person can do something to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
