We have not managed to still healing but yes we are optimizing the process of care. This care it is nurturing, especially from the point of view of the disease: how to delay it, how to prevent complications, how to control the symptoms, how to stabilize the functional status of people, etc.
But... and the person? Are we seeing it? How is the inner world of a person who suffers from dementia? What shall we do as professionals to maintain their welfare? Dementia affects not only one dimension of the person. It is essential to have a wide look and care for all its dimensions. The person is not only mind or behavior, also is body and emotion.

We now know that the identity of a person depends not only on their thoughts, their language or their capacity, for example, to write. The emotional world of people with dementia is kept alive, in hope to continue to preserve, at least a part of the identity of the person and therefore a well-being, even if it is relative. The professional challenge which we are concerned in this respect consists of adopt and extend in everyday practice and of welfare services an approach based on the attention focused on the person, so offered care to customize is respecting the uniqueness and will of the person who is being cared for at all times. But, how we approach people with dementia to that guide us in our work as professionals and so we design personal care and wellness forms?
Starting from the biography of the people we serve is essential to integrate past and present. This is the way to take a broad perspective and, thus, to prepare a future according to what has been lived, while preserving, to the extent possible, their identities.
